Framework will Address Content Management Challenges Specific
to the Wireless Web: Varying Standards, Bandwidth Limitations, Poorly Formatted
Content and Device Proliferation
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -September 28, 2000 - Interwoven Inc. (Nasdaq: IWOV), the
leading provider of enterprise-class content management solutions, today announced
the launch of Interwoven's Framework for the Wireless Web, intelligent content
management for wireless. The framework, through both Interwoven and partner
solutions, extends Interwoven's success in delivering a scalable, inclusive
content architecture for the desktop Web environment, to the wireless Web.
"It is a natural extension of Interwoven's success in managing enterprise-class
Web sites to be embracing the wireless Web," said John Van Siclen, senior vice
president of corporate development at Interwoven. "Due to its integral role
in the content creation process, its core technologies and effective alliances
across the wireless Web value chain, Interwoven is uniquely qualified to help
enterprises accelerate their move to the wireless Web."
There are a number of challenges to the development and deployment of scalable,
production level, wireless Web applications:
Emerging Wireless Standards - because Interwoven solutions are based on
XML-tagged content, wireless output can be generated for multiple protocols
and mark-up languages, including WAP, Web clippings (Palm), cHTML (iMode) etc,
thereby protecting content creation and publishing investments against future
shifts in wireless protocols and standards.
Device proliferation - The limited and varied screen sizes of wireless devices
can create a very manual QA process to ensure that content designated for the
Web is properly reformatted for the wireless Web. By integrating TeamSite Templating
directly with different wireless emulators for WAP phones, Palm etc, Interwoven
customers will be able to manage and validate all Web assets from a single content
management platform.
Bandwidth and interface limitations - To facilitate the delivery of a robust
and personalized experience for wireless users, Interwoven will provide both
products and partner integrations to address bandwidth and user interface limitations.
"e-businesses who are extending their Web properties to the wireless Web will
meet several challenges including multiple protocols, languages, device variety,
and of course bandwidth and screen limitations," said Dave Hybels, senior analyst
at e-services firm, Extraprise in Boston. "Interwoven's efforts in developing
a ubiquitous content management solution will play a key role in helping e-businesses
make the move to this lucrative space."
The framework will extend across the entire wireless Web value chain including:
Content creation, transformation and management: Interwoven will leverage
its partnerships with companies like AvantGo, 2 Roam and EveryPath to provide
industry leading content transformation solutions that will enable enterprises
to re-purpose their legacy HTML content for the wireless Web quickly and easily.
(See separate announcement by Everypath issued today) For multi-device content
that will be created going forward, Interwoven will continue to provide its
open, file-system interface for best-of-breed wireless content creation tools,
as well as extend its industry-leading XML-based TeamSite Templating environment
for better wireless support based on an open, standards-based XML architecture.
Interwoven's XML-based tagging and templating tools will enable enterprises
to create content once, and re-purpose and re-use this intelligent content,
appropriately rendered for multiple devices.
Mobile Applications: Interwoven will extend its existing partnerships with
leading run-time delivery partners like BEA and ATG to empower customers to
reap the benefits of open, J2EE compliant solutions for multi-device personalization
needs. In addition, Interwoven has partnered with mobile application providers
like Tantau, AnyDevice and ViaFone to enable enterprises to develop customized
applications for the wireless Web. (See separate announcements from AnyDevice
and ViaFone also issued today)
Wireless Delivery: Interwoven has partnered with AlterEgo to allow enterprises
to not only re-purpose content for wireless devices, but also enable optimal
caching and wireless delivery across AlterEgo's Adaptive Network. (Interwoven
and AlterEgo announced a strategic alliance on September 12, 2000. See http://www.interwoven.com.tw/news/press/2000/0912alteregopr.html )
Credit Suisse First Boston has been working with Interwoven closely over the
last six months on both wireline and wireless Web initiatives. (See separate
release issued today by Interwoven.) "Interwoven's open, XML architecture and
recently announced wireless framework are very consistent with CSFB's vision
of a device-independent, standards-based wireless Web," said Evan Bauer, director
of global information technology for CSFB. "As we aggressively expand our wireless
Internet strategy, Interwoven's new XML-based technologies will let us use a
single platform and common content across protocols and connection mechanisms,
building on our wired Web investment."
"Our ability to insert XML tags and meta data as part of the content creation
process allows us to substantially enhance the robustness of downstream applications
provided by our partners, in areas such as presentation, personalization, push
services and optimized delivery on the wireless Web," said Vikram Nagrani, vice
president and general manager of Interwoven's wireless division. "This is an
important first step in our product roadmap for an aggressive move to provide
industry leading intelligent content services for wireless-aware applications."
Initial Interwoven content management solutions for wireless are expected to
be available in Q4 2000.
